We all know how frustrating it can be to toss and turn, trying to drift off while the room is bathed in unwanted light. Whether it’s streetlights, early morning sun, or even a neighbor’s porch light, these intrusions can make it nearly impossible to get the restful sleep you need. As someone who has lived in various apartments with different light challenges, I’ve experimented with numerous solutions. Some were too expensive, others too complicated, and many just didn’t work. But fear not! I’ve discovered a simple, cost-effective method to create black-out curtains that will transform your sleeping space into a dark, cozy haven. This project is perfect for renters and anyone looking for a quick fix without the hassle of permanent installations.

Not only will this solution save you money, but it also requires minimal supplies and can be completed in just 15 minutes. Imagine the luxury of a pitch-black room, perfect for a deep, uninterrupted sleep, without the need for drilling holes or making permanent changes to your living space. Plus, these blackout curtains can easily be taken down and reinstalled, making them ideal for anyone who moves frequently or likes to change up their decor. So, grab your supplies and let’s get started on making your bedroom the perfect sanctuary for sleep!

Supplies

  • Command Strips (https://a.co/d/10GEZGq)
  • A Dark Bedsheet or Blanket (If you use PVC you may need to choose something that isn’t too heavy. Typically the darker colored blankets do the best job of keeping out light, however they can sometimes get very heavy.)
  • 2 Metal Pieces or Hooks (I just went to Home Depot and found a metal piece for less than 2 dollars that I knew I could stick to the wall with a command strip. Feel free to use something you already have at home!) (https://a.co/d/8f2ON0T)
  • PVC Pipe (at least longer than the width of the window)
  • Rubber Band (optional)

How to Build Black-Out Curtains

Total Time: 15 minutes

  1. Command Strip the Metal Hook to the Wall
    • I find it easier if you put the first strip on the metal piece, and then the other on the wall. If you are using PVC pipe you may want to put it a little higher than you think as it will sag over time.
  2. Wrap the Blanket Over the PVC Pipe
    • Make sure there is enough on both sides that it won’t slip of the PVC
    • I like to make both sides close to even to give another layer of black out curtains.
  3. Place PVC Pipe Onto Hooks
    • Depending on the Metal pieces you use, this can be tricky, but it should balance up there.
  4. If Loose, Secure Hooks with Rubber Band
    • Attach the Rubberband to the metal piece around the pipe, so it has no where to go
    • You could also attach another piece so the pipe can slide straight out.

Detailed Tutorial: How to Build Black-Out Curtains

Step 1: Command Strip the Metal Hook to the Wall

Alright, let’s start by getting those Command Strips ready. Take one strip and firmly press it onto the back of your metal piece. Make sure it’s stuck on there good and tight. Now, find the perfect spot on your wall where you want to hang your curtain. Remember, if you’re using a PVC pipe, place the hook a bit higher than you think you’ll need. This is because PVC can sag over time, and we want to keep those curtains nice and taut. Once you’ve found the spot, peel off the backing from the second Command Strip and press it onto the wall. Hold it there for a good 30 seconds to make sure it adheres properly. We don’t want any mishaps later on!

Step 2: Wrap the Blanket Over the PVC Pipe

Next up, grab your dark blanket or bedsheet. Lay it out flat and place your PVC pipe along one edge. Now, carefully start wrapping the blanket around the pipe. Make sure you leave enough fabric on both sides so it won’t slip off. I like to make sure both sides are close to even, which not only looks nice but also gives you an extra layer of blackout protection. As you wrap, smooth out any wrinkles or folds to keep it looking neat. If your blanket is particularly heavy, you might need to adjust it a bit to make sure it stays in place. Take your time with this step; it’s worth it to get it just right.

Step 3: Place PVC Pipe Onto Hooks

Now comes the fun part! Carefully lift your PVC pipe with the wrapped blanket and bring it over to the hooks you just installed. This can be a bit tricky, so take your time. Gently place one end of the pipe onto one hook, then the other end onto the second hook. Depending on the type of metal pieces you used, you might need to do a bit of balancing to get it to stay up there. If it feels a bit wobbly, don’t worry. We’ll secure it in the next step. Just make sure it’s sitting nicely on the hooks for now.

Step 4: If Loose, Secure Hooks with Rubber Band

If your setup feels a bit unstable, it’s time to bring in the rubber band. Take the rubber band and loop it around the metal piece and the PVC pipe. This will help keep everything in place and prevent the pipe from sliding off the hooks. If you find that one rubber band isn’t enough, feel free to use a second one for extra security. You could also attach another piece of metal or a hook to make sure the pipe has nowhere to go. This step is all about making sure your blackout curtains stay put, so don’t be afraid to get creative with your solutions.

And there you have it! Your very own blackout curtains, made with love and a touch of spunk. Enjoy your newfound darkness! 🌙✨

These curtains are perfect for creating a cozy, dark space for movie nights, afternoon naps, or just keeping the early morning sun at bay. Plus, they’re a fantastic way to save on energy costs by keeping your room cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. You’ll be amazed at how much difference a little DIY project can make in your home.

Remember, the beauty of this project is its simplicity and flexibility. You can easily adjust the materials and methods to suit your needs and preferences. Maybe you’ll find a lighter blanket that works just as well, or perhaps you’ll discover a different type of hook that’s even easier to use. The possibilities are endless, and the best part is that you’ve created something functional and stylish with your own two hands.

So, pat yourself on the back, pour yourself a nice cup of tea, and bask in the satisfaction of a job well done. You’ve not only improved your living space but also gained a handy new skill. Who knows? This might just be the start of many more DIY adventures. Happy crafting, and may your days be as bright or as dark as you wish them to be! 🌟🛠️
