Making a Jewelry Display from a Picture Frame
It turns out, making a jewelry display from a picture frame was way easier than I expected. I have seen a lot of them made and have wanted to create my own for a long time now and today’s the day! People use a variety of different materials but below i will list out what i have chosen to use for my project.
I found that using higher-quality materials made a huge difference in the final product. The right materials gave me more control over how sturdy and attractive the display turned out.
Supplies You’ll Need:
- Picture Frame – Any size will work, but larger frames can hold more jewelry.
- Decorative Sheet Metal – Available at craft stores or online.
- Old Door Knobs or Drawer handles – For hanging necklaces and bracelets.
- Safety glasses – To protect your eyes
- Sharpie/marker – To draw your line
- Ruler – To create a straight line edge to cut along
- Wire Cutters – For cutting the sheet metal to size.
- Staple Gun – To attach the sheet metal to the frame.
- Screws and Screwdriver – For attaching the handles (You can use what they came with or by some shorter screws. A lot of times, the screws that come with the knobs are pretty long so you may need to grind them down.)
- Pliers/ Wrenches – To tighten the knobs
- Washers/ nuts – To help secure the knobs w/out going through the sheet metal
- Staple Gun – To attach the sheet metal to the frame.
- *Optional Grinder – To shorten the length of your screws so they don’t stick out and poke your wall.

Detailed Tutorial: How I make my picture frame Jewelry Display
Step 1: Choose Your Frame
Depending on your preferences, choosing the right frame can be the easiest or the hardest part.
Sources for Picture Frames:
- Thrift Stores: Great for finding unique and affordable frames.
- Garage Sales: Another good source for inexpensive frames.
- Craft Stores: If you prefer new frames, craft stores have a wide selection.
Step 2: Select Your Sheet Metal
You can use a variety of decorative sheet metals for your jewelry holder. In my case, I used a patterned sheet metal that I picked up at Lowe’s. Most home improvement/ craft stores should have different options. Here are some other ideas you could try:
- Patterned Metal: Adds a decorative touch.
- Plain Metal: Simple and functional.
- Colored Metal: To match your decor.
Step 3: Prepare Your Workspace
Make sure your workspace is clean and organized. Lay down newspaper or a drop cloth to catch any paint or metal shavings.
Step 4: Cut the Sheet Metal
Using wire cutters, carefully cut the sheet metal to fit the inside of your frame. You can take a ruler/ yardstick and marker to mark a straight line on your sheet metal. *Wear gloves to help protect your hands, I learned first hand (No pun intended) how sharp it is! Also, be sure to wear your safety goggles!
Step 5: Attach the Sheet Metal
Place the cut sheet metal into the frame and secure it with a staple gun. Make sure it is tight and secure. *In my case there were already staples attached to the frame so i just cut to size, slid in the sheet metal, then secured it to the frame using the staples that were already attached to the frame.
Step 6: Add Handles
Attach the handles to your frame using screws. These will be used to hang necklaces and bracelets.
- Some of the screws attached to the knobs/ handles may be too long. If this is the case, you can use a grinder to shorten them up a bit and prevent them from going through your wall! (Note: Make sure and where your safety glasses and have a stable surface to cut on. I also had to take my guard off because the blade i bought was too big, but normally you would keep that on for additional safety!)
Step 7: Hang and Organize
Once your jewelry display is complete and your knobs/ handles are all attached securely, hang it on a wall and you can start organizing your jewelry. I hope you enjoy the added utility and visibility of your new jewelry holder!
